Strengthening ECMO Capacity in South Africa: CBM Lifemotion Supports Advanced Training at Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital

MIRANDOLA, Italy – July 30, 2025

CBM Lifemotion is proud to have supported the recent ECMO training course held on 25–26 July 2025 at Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa. Conducted in partnership with our regional distribution partner, Respiratory Care Africa (RCA), the program formed part of our broader commitment to advancing extracorporeal therapy through education, collaboration, and clinical integration.

Organized by ECMO South Africa, the two-day course brought together a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals—including intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and educators—for a comprehensive learning experience that combined theoretical modules with hands-on, simulation-based training. The curriculum focused on the safe and effective use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the management of critically ill patients, with particular attention to circuit interaction and real-world application in the ICU setting.

“The scope and depth of the course were exceptional,” said Michael van Driel, International Vice President of CBM Lifemotion.“The use of simulation and practical instruction exemplifies how ECMO training should be conducted. The work being led by Dr. Marlice van Dyk, Dr. Norbert Welkovics, and their colleagues at the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital Education Centre reflects a deep commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centered care.”

The training sessions incorporated CBM Lifemotion’s Lifemotion® system, offering participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a CE-marked, modular ECMO platform designed for seamless integration in both ICU and transport settings. The system’s mobility, intuitive interface, and real-time monitoring features contributed to a practical and effective learning environment.

This initiative underscores CBM Lifemotion’s mission to support the global expansion of extracorporeal life support through technology, training, and strategic partnerships. By contributing to the development of local expertise, we aim to create sustainable value for clinicians, healthcare institutions, and critically ill patients worldwide.

In addition to delivering high-quality education, the course fostered professional exchange and collaboration, helping to strengthen the regional ECMO community and establish a foundation for continued capacity building across the African continent.

CBM Lifemotion expresses sincere appreciation to Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital, ECMO SA, Respiratory Care Africa, and all participating clinicians for their dedication and engagement throughout the training. We remain committed to supporting efforts that enhance the delivery of advanced life support therapies—anywhere they are needed.
